What are the occupational hazards in implant manufacturing?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have read an article about disinfectants in implant dentistry now. My brother works in an implant manufacturing laboratory. So, kindly help me know the occupational hazards related to his laboratory work.

Is the radiation in his workplace harmful? And also, as his mom had cancer recently, could he be prone to that?

Kindly advise.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Regarding occupational hazards, I would say that implant disinfection involves exposure to specific chemicals and laser-assisted methods. As dentistry itself is associated with occupational hazards, all professionals related to it have some occupational hazards.

All of us have oncogenes. But they get activated only by genetic recession, by specific radiation, or through chemical exposures. He has nothing to worry about if he maintains safety measures like a face shield, mouth mask, lifestyle management, and proper oral hygiene. An N95 mask is needed during this pandemic.

I do not think that he is associated with any risk of cancer from his occupation.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

He felt relieved after your reply because he was unaware of the repercussions of his occupation on his lungs, mouth, or eyes.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Many people are prone to occupational hazards, but it is not the sphere of radiation to which they are exposed in the field of implant dentistry. So nothing to worry about.

I wish you good health.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

My doubts are cleared. My brother was very petrified about the hazards, as this had been happening for many years. What to use for mouth ulcers?

Kindly suggest.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am happy that your brother felt secure after talking to me. Occupational hazards are more related to the direct handling of hazardous or contaminated material or instruments. Regular yearly checkups, either way, are a mandate to ensure the lungs are healthy.

For mouth ulcers, I suggest you take:

  1. Nutritional supplements such as SM Fibro capsule (Alpha-lipoic acid, Lycopene, Beta-carotene, Selenium, Zinc, Copper, and Alpha tocopheryl acetate).
  2. Supplements of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids thrice a week.
  3. You can use mouthwash regularly.

Consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Nowadays, I do not know if I am having bleeding in my gums while brushing because of stress or mental tension. I do not even have deposits or bad breath. Why does this sudden bleeding from my gums start when I eat spicy food or brush?

Kindly advise.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Bleeding gums have nothing to do with bad breath or any systemic condition. Gingival bleeding can happen even if you do not get your yearly oral prophylaxis or scaling done. That is because those deposits or stains need removal by a professional every year, and it is advisable to get a scaling done.

Suppose you have bleeding on brushing even after scaling. In that case, I suggest you use the SM Fibro capsule (Alpha-lipoic acid, Lycopene, Beta-carotene, Selenium, Zinc, Copper, and Alpha tocopheryl acetate) for 15 days after breakfast daily (consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent). It is an antioxidant, and it stimulates good gingival health.

Additionally, I suggest you do regular lukewarm saltwater rinsing five to six times daily.

I wish you good health.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I am happy after consulting with you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the feedback.

You can get back if you have any other doubts.

Kind regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Could you suggest some sensitive mouthwash or toothpaste? I got scaling done as you suggested. The dentist said there was loads of blood, but I am not sure that has helped me yet because I still feel that I might have a dry mouth.

I do not know if it is because of stress. I have not taken SM Fibro capsules yet. Kindly advise.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You should have been taking SM Fibro capsules for 3 months. It has antioxidant properties that help prevent, or at least subdue, gingival bleeding. If you feel you are not continuing it for any other reason, I suggest you start using Chlorhexidine mouthwash daily for three months (consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent). After three months, you can switch to a regular mouthwash.

For dry mouth, eat saliva-stimulating foods or keep yourself hydrated, and continue saltwater rinsing multiple times a day.

Post scaling, it is natural for teeth to feel a little sensitive. However, the sensitivity will eventually come down, and do not be anxious about this. I suggest you start taking nutritional supplements, such as omega-3 or omega-6.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Please suggest an alternative to omega-3 or omega-6 supplements. I am worried that just for the dental cause, I might be taking excess saturated fatty acids. What exactly is the antioxidant alternative to Omega?

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can suggest alternatives. I suggest you continue taking your medications once daily after breakfast. I had already told you this earlier.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Hair fall seems to be more with the SM Fibro capsule. Is it safe to take the capsule every day? Please suggest some alternative medicine for my gum bleeding or mouth ulcer. I feel better.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I suggest you take the Neurobion forte tablet (B vitamins). That will not only enhance your nerve strength, but it is just like any other multivitamin. So, you can be sure your gum health will improve further when you follow all the previously suggested measures, such as Chlorhexidine 0.2% mouthwash for three months.

Whenever ulcers occur, take the tablet Neurobion forte for around ten days a month along with vitamin E capsules for five days (consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent).

I hope this helps.

Do get back in case of any further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor.

Thank you for the reply.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Please tell me whether the supplement can be given to children.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I am sure that I must have misunderstood your question. Do not give any supplement or tablet to your children. Give them green leafy veggies. If you are an egg-eater, give them more eggs, and if they are not gluten or lactose intolerant, you can give lots of tofu, paneer, and dairy products.

Please refrain from giving direct antioxidants to children. However, you can definitely use it, since it would certainly be beneficial for females, as I mentioned last time.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have a very urgent doubt that needs to be clarified. Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I will definitely clarify your doubts. Please let me know in detail about your doubts.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Is it true that mouthwash can cause staining of teeth? I notice mild yellowing of my teeth, and I doubt whether it could be because of the mouthwash.

Kindly advise.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Do you mean the chlorhexidine mouthwash? In that case, yes, long-term use in some people can cause staining of the teeth. If you are noticing yellowing of the enamel, it may be time to switch to a different mouthwash.

Based on your needs and past dental history, I would suggest using a mouthwash containing potassium nitrate, cetylpyridinium chloride, or a mint- or tulsi-based formulation.

I hope this helps.

Do get back in case of any further queries.

Thank you.
