What steps should be taken to manage post-radiation issues?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 55 and dealing with severe post-radiation complications after completing treatment two months ago for intermediate-risk prostate cancer (Gleason 7). I am experiencing daily rectal bleeding, hourly urinary frequency, and new-onset erectile dysfunction, which are significantly impacting my remote software engineering work due to constant bathroom breaks. A recent colonoscopy confirmed radiation proctitis. I am also on blood pressure and cholesterol medications and need to know if these side effects are normal or require medical intervention. I am considering hyperbaric oxygen therapy but am unsure if my insurance will cover it. Any guidance on managing these symptoms and the next steps would be appreciated.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Fortunately, most undesirable side effects of radiation, such as rectal bleeding and urinary frequency, typically resolve within two to six months. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help by improving tissue healing and preventing further damage caused by radiation exposure through increased oxygen delivery in the blood.

To accelerate recovery, include sea vegetables, mushrooms, raisins, salmon, and other fatty fish in your diet. Stay hydrated, eat nutritious foods, and consider incorporating probiotics, honey, and regular exercise. Communicating openly with your doctor is essential to managing side effects early and preventing complications.

I hope this addresses your concerns.

Thank you.
