Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am thinking of getting an HIV test done but not sure if rapid tests are accurate. Can you explain how they work and what the results mean? Are there other types of tests I should consider, and do they give more reliable results?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Rapid HIV tests can detect HIV antibodies or antigens in blood or oral fluids. The results will be available in less than 30 minutes. They are accurate but may not detect recent infections within the "window period" (up to three months after exposure). The confirmatory and more accurate tests are HPV (human papillomavirus) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) swab test, HIV fourth generation antigen/antibody test, and urine complete. They are more reliable. Take care.
I hope this helps.
Thank you and take care.
Regards.
