What could be the cause of recurring bumps on the head?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a bump on the back of my head, which appeared after I went to a certain barbershop. It does not go away and secretes small amounts of pus and blood. I got it two years ago. It was slightly smaller at that time, and I thought it was just a normal bump that would eventually go away. However, when I went to the same barbershop again, it got worse and bigger.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You might have an infected hair follicle or a minor wound. It is best to clean the area gently with soap and water, apply a mild antiseptic ointment, and keep it covered with a sterile dressing. I suggest you follow these general guidelines for wound care:

1. Clean the area: Gently wash the affected area with soap and water to remove any dirt or bacteria.

2. Apply an antiseptic ointment: Use a mild antiseptic ointment or cream to help prevent infection.

3. Cover the wound: Use a sterile dressing or bandage to protect the area.

4. Monitor the wound: Monitor the bump and check if it is getting better or worse.

If the bump does not improve or worsens, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for proper examination and treatment. You may then have to take antibiotic medication.

I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you.
