Recurrent Erection

Recurrent and painful erections which occur without any sexual stimuli are called priapism. It can be ischemic or non-ischemic priapism which is due to restricted blood flow and trauma, respectively. Erections lasting for more than four hours is considered a medical emergency as deoxygenated blood can result in penile tissue damage. Pain along with persistent erection for more than four hours is an important sign of priapism. Draining the excess blood, using decongestants help in treating the condition.
