What are the best hair removal options for sensitive skin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi Doctor,

I have facial hair on my upper lip, but no matter what method I use—shaver, cream, blade, epilator, or threading—it always causes rashes, which take a few days to heal.

I also have very dry skin at the corners of my lips, but I cannot apply any cream or oil on my face because it causes breakouts.

Kindly help

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It sounds like you have sensitive skin that reacts negatively to hair removal methods, along with dryness around your lips. If traditional hair removal techniques irritate, you might consider alternatives such as laser hair removal, which offers a more permanent solution and is generally gentle on the skin after completing multiple sessions. Depilatory creams designed for sensitive skin can also be an option, but it is essential to test them on a small patch of skin first to check for any reactions. Epilators with a sensitive mode may reduce irritation if used on the lowest setting with proper exfoliation beforehand. Electric trimmers or razors are often gentler than waxing or traditional razors, and pairing them with a soothing gel can help prevent irritation.

For the dryness around your lips, gentle hydration is key. Since creams or oils tend to cause breakouts, you could try aloe vera gel or Hyaluronic acid serum, which are non-comedogenic and can soothe dry patches without clogging pores. Using a mild lip scrub made from natural ingredients like honey and sugar can help remove dead skin without being too harsh. Additionally, avoiding harsh skincare products and sticking to non-comedogenic and gentle formulations may help prevent further irritation. Regular but gentle exfoliation once a week can also aid in removing dead skin cells and reducing the likelihood of ingrown hairs. If your skin sensitivity and breakouts persist, consulting a dermatologist might be beneficial in finding the most suitable hair removal method and skincare routine tailored to your needs. Would you like to explore any of these options further?

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
