Why do I have rashes on my thighs and pubic area?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a red circular rash on the back of my thighs, extending to my inner bikini line and chest area. What could this be?

Please guide

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand how uncomfortable and concerning these red, itchy patches must be for you. Based on the history and images you provided (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), it appears that you have Tinea corporis and cruris, which is a skin fungal infection affecting the body. This condition is manageable and not something to worry about.

I will guide you through the treatment regimen and home care step by step.

  1. Please start by applying topical Bifonazole Cream 1% to the affected areas at bedtime. Use it once daily for two weeks.

  2. After this period, please follow up with me, as you may need to continue treatment for an additional two weeks even if the rash appears to be gone.

  3. For itch relief, you can take either Fexofenadine 120 mg at bedtime, which is non-sedating, or Cetirizine 10 mg, which may cause drowsiness.

  4. Choose the antihistamine based on your daily routine and whether you are affected by drowsiness.

  5. For general care, keep the area dry, avoid hot showers, and refrain from taking more than two showers per day, as excessive moisture can promote fungal growth.

  6. Additionally, avoid sharing clothes or towels to prevent spreading the infection.

With the right medication, you should see near-complete resolution of symptoms in two to three weeks.

Please follow up if the rash spreads (you may need an oral medication) or after full resolution, as you may need to continue topical treatment for an additional two weeks to prevent recurrence.

If you have any questions or require further assistance at any time, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to help.

Thank you.
