Can surgery correct my broad face and underdeveloped jaw?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a broad flat face and an underdeveloped maxilla and jaw. I want to ask what treatment and surgery are possible.

Thanks.

Hi, Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I have reviewed your attached images (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). The problem is not just the maxillary arch but a retruded mandible or lower jaw.

Mandibular retrusion would be due to various causes. It is usually seen in some syndromes. You can get this corrected utilizing sagittal split osteotomy, a form of orthognathic surgery for the lower jaw that will help properly align and adjust your face aches.

Firstly you should plan a cephalometric analysis of your upper and lower jaw. After that, splints will be given if you want to know in detail how we surgically plan or how you should consult an orthodontist and surgeon for these steps.

Do you have any family history of any syndrome, genetic conditions for anyone in your family, or another medical history?

I hope this information will work.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

No, both my parents had no problem. And so with all my family members. And I am 18 years old.

A problem that might be relevant is that I cannot breathe through my nose, but during sleep, it gets more complex, and my nose gets blocked. But I will get an appointment this month to show it for treatment.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Do you mean that you have difficulty sleeping? How long would you say a blocked nose has bothered you? It would help me give you and plan a range of options.

It would be best if you were ideally opting for orthognathic surgery. However, I want to know from when, what age, or how long has blocked nose has been your complaint.

Thank you.
