Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have had ringworm for around three to four months, in the beginning. I only took Clotrimazole topical cream. Then I took Clotrimazole, Betamethasone dipropionate cream, and Itraconazole capsules. Now I am taking Clotrimazole cream, Mometasone furoate cream and one fluconazole capsule a week. This is a new course that I started today. My question is, is it okay to use Mometasone furoate for ringworms?
Please suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Using Mometasone furoate (a steroid) for ringworm (fungal infection) is not recommended because steroids can weaken the skin's defense and make the infection worse in the long run. Steroids like Mometasone are bad for ringworms because they suppress the immune response, allowing the fungus to spread deeper. They can make ringworm look better temporarily, but the infection often returns worse after stopping. Prolonged use can lead to "tinea incognito", where the infection becomes resistant and harder to treat. The best treatment for long-lasting ringworm is to continue Fluconazole (an antifungal pill). Taking one capsule per week is effective for deep or stubborn infections. Use only Clotrimazole or Ketoconazole cream. Apply twice daily for at least four weeks, even if the rash improves earlier.
I hope this helps.
Thank you, and take care.
