Can swelling occur on the face after an incomplete RCT?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My dentist did half of the root canal treatment, filled it in, and sent me home. Recently, the filling has fallen out and I have not been able to get to the dentist. My tooth does not hurt, but I can occasionally taste blood, however, my cheek and gums have swollen up immensely in the past hour, and the swelling has even reached my lower eyelid. I put clove oil on my gums and tooth, left it for 20 minutes, and then rinsed my mouth seven times with salt water solution. I took some anti-inflammatory tablets like Amitriptyline. I am on this anti-inflammatory for a chronic pain injury residing in my spine and rib cage, it is the only anti-inflammatory my body has responded to. Others such as Celecoxib and Mobic did not work, and over-the-counter medicines did not work either. I have been applying ice on the swelling for 20 minutes every 30 to 40 minutes. The swelling has not even decreased. It has indeed increased and reached the lower eyelid. Please help me find a way to reduce this swelling.I do not have any pain. It is simply sore from the amount of swelling there is. Does this have anything to do with the unfinished root canal? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and I can understand your concern.

Yes, it has something to do with your unfinished root canal treatment. The infection is in the mouth and it is still there near the tooth. The dentist has given you a temporary filling material. Visit any oral surgeon and ask them to correct this swelling. Sometimes, it can be due to the anesthesia used during root canal treatment because it can affect the tissues if you are allergic to its contents. Add turmeric while rinsing your mouth. Apply a warm cloth on the face near the swelling. I suggest you take a blood test if this does not reduce the swelling.

I wish you good health and happiness.

Thank you.
