Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 34-year-old female. Over the past few weeks, I have experienced persistent itching, especially at night, along with the appearance of small red bumps and a rash. After consulting with a dermatologist, I have been diagnosed with scabies. I would like to learn more about the recommended treatment options for scabies, including topical creams or medications. Are there any specific considerations or precautions I should be aware of while undergoing treatment? What steps should I take after completing the prescribed treatment to ensure that the scabies mites have been effectively eradicated and to prevent a recurrence of the condition?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I do understand your concern. The hallmark of scabies includes the involvement of the web spaces of the fingers and toes (inflammatory papules, vesicles, or excoriation marks), night aggravation of itching, and similar complaints in family members. Scabies can also be transmitted through fomites. Avoid sharing personal belongings with family members. Wash clothes separately in hot water. Decontaminate the towels and bed linens of the affected person. Treatment options available are as follows:

  1. Apply 5% Permethrin cream below the neck on day one and day seven, with a contact period of eight to 12 hours.
  2. Use Permethrin or Cetrimide soap for bathing for two months.
  3. Take tablet Hydroxyzine 10 mg twice daily for seven days (if itching persists).
  4. Apply a combination of Betamethasone and Fusidic Acid cream at night on the lesions for seven days.

Additionally, maintain proper hygiene as it plays a very important role.

Thank you.
