Is scalp psoriasis different from psoriasis on the body?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 42 years old and have psoriasis, and my scalp has become very difficult to manage.
Why does psoriasis at the age of 42 affect the scalp differently from the skin on the rest of the body? Creams that help the psoriasis on my elbows do not seem to help my scalp at all.
The flakes itch, burn, and show up on my clothes, which feels humiliating. Is scalp psoriasis different from psoriasis on other parts of the body? Are there better treatment options than messy oils? Washing my hair is painful, and stress seems to make the condition worse.
I avoid social situations because people stare at me. I feel embarrassed even though I know it is a medical condition. I just want something that actually works without damaging my hair or affecting my confidence. It seems that this area is often overlooked in treatment plans.
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I am sorry you are going through this. Scalp psoriasis can be particularly frustrating and distressing because the scalp is very different from other areas of the body.
The thick hair makes it harder for treatments to reach the skin, and scalp psoriasis often produces thicker scales, more itching, and more visible flaking than plaques on the elbows or knees. Stress can also trigger flare-ups and worsen symptoms, which many people notice.
The good news is that scalp psoriasis is not a sign of poor hygiene, and the flakes and redness are part of a medical condition, not something you caused.
If creams that help your body's psoriasis are not working on your scalp, there are treatments specifically designed for this area. This includes:
-
Medicated shampoos containing coal tar or salicylic acid.
-
Topical corticosteroid solutions.
-
Foams.
-
Sprays.
-
Prescription vitamin D-based treatments that are easier to apply through hair than traditional ointments.
For people with more severe or persistent scalp psoriasis, dermatologists may recommend light therapy or systemic treatments such as biologic medications, which can significantly improve scalp symptoms as well as psoriasis elsewhere on the body.
Hope you found this useful. For further queries, you can consult me at icliniq.
Thank you.
