Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had a dull aching pain just above the back of my left knee (near the hamstring) and in my left buttock on occasions for about five weeks now. I am normally fine sitting but hurts when standing still or walking. Could it be a hamstring strain or sciatica?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You lie down on your back, stretch your legs straigh, then lift your left lower limb up without bending knee joint. If you get severe pulling pain from buttock to whole leg, then it is sciatica. This test is called (SLR) straight leg raising test. Hamstring muscle pain in the back of the thigh and lower buttock when walking, straightening the leg, or bending over. Do the SLR test to know there is sciatica or not.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I think it is a hamstring strain. Is it normal though to still have this same pain after five weeks?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Hamstring pain may go if you take rest or with sportive bandage to thigh and knee.

1. Sciatica is caused by irritation of the root(s) of the lower lumbar and lumbosacral spine.

2. Other causes of sciatica include: Lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back).

3. Degenerative disc disease (breakdown of discs, which act as cushions between the vertebrae).

Most cases, sciatica will go away on its own, in majority of cases, will recover within six weeks. Severe type and pain will need medication and surgery to relieve.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
