Could scrub typhus cause lasting organ damage?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 42-year-old man who was diagnosed with scrub typhus after returning from a camping trip. I experienced fever, headaches, muscle pain, and a sore with a scab on my leg. Blood tests revealed low platelets and high liver enzymes. I have been taking Doxycycline for six days, and while the fever has subsided, I still feel very tired, occasionally dizzy, and have mild joint pain. Could this infection have caused lasting damage to my organs? Should I undergo follow-up tests, and how long will it take to fully recover?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

It is good to hear that your fever has resolved. Scrub typhus can sometimes cause complications like liver or kidney issues, but with proper treatment, most people recover fully. Your elevated liver enzymes suggest some impact, but liver function usually improves after the infection clears. Low platelet levels may also be temporary and should normalize soon. Regular monitoring will help ensure proper recovery. Stay in touch with your doctor if any new symptoms appear.

Follow-up tests, including liver function and platelet count, can track your progress. Recovery usually takes a few weeks, though fatigue and mild joint pain may persist. Occasional dizziness is common, but if symptoms worsen, consult your doctor. Stay hydrated, eat well, and rest to support healing. Light physical activity may help regain strength once you start feeling better. If concerns arise, seek medical advice.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
