Can a child suffer from a stress-induced seizure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter is in foster care, and I received a call saying she had a seizure. What is a stress-induced seizure in a 3-year-old?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Regarding your symptoms, I believe your daughter may have developed epilepsy. To rule out epilepsy and other causes of the seizures, I need to know the below-mentioned information:

  1. If she has had a fever.

  2. Completed her immunizations.

  3. Cried after delivery.

  4. Experienced frequent falls after birth.

  5. Had jaundice after delivery.

  6. Is she adequately hydrated?

I suggest you have an electroencephalogram (EEG) test done and share the results with me. Also, let her take one tablet of Phenytoin 60 mg orally twice a day for one month. Stress-induced seizures are convulsions that occur due to stress, but this is rarely seen in children.

I hope I have resolved your query.

I will be happy to assist you further. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
