Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have a sinus infection that seems to be progressing into an upper respiratory infection. I am usually prescribed Cephalexin for such infections, but I want to confirm if it is safe to take alongside Semaglutide or if I should request an alternative antibiotic. Can I take Cephalexin Monohydrate 500 mg while on Compound Semaglutide 0.2 mg?
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
There is no significant interaction between Cephalexin (first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic) and Semaglutide (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 receptor agonist), so it is safe to take if prescribed. However, Semaglutide slows gastric emptying, which may delay the absorption of orally administered antibiotics. If you are also taking other anti-diabetic medications like Metformin, consult your doctor, as Cephalexin can interact with it. For future reference, antibiotic interactions with Semaglutide are more relevant for drugs like Ciprofloxacin (fluoroquinolone antibiotic) and Levofloxacin (fluoroquinolone antibiotic). If you are using Compound Semaglutide for obesity management, you may consider pausing it temporarily during your antibiotic course, but only with your doctor's approval.
I hope this helps.
Thank you and take care.
