Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I wanted to check if Semaglutide is safe for my older brother. He is 46 and has had type 2 diabetes for over eight years. His blood sugar levels are still out of control even with Metformin and Glimepiride. He also gained weight—his BMI is now around 33. His recent tests showed slightly elevated LFT and creatinine levels. We heard that Semaglutide helps with both blood sugar control and weight loss. But is it safe with high LFT and borderline kidney function issues? Should he do a CBC or other blood tests before starting? How long does it take to see results? And if he stops it later, will his weight and blood sugar rebound badly? Also, are there any side effects to watch out for? He is worried about the risk of pancreatitis. How common is that?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Semaglutide can help with blood sugar control and weight loss, but your brother's elevated liver and kidney function tests need careful consideration. He should consult his healthcare provider and get a CBC (complete blood count), liver, and kidney function tests before starting. Results can be seen in two to four weeks for appetite and blood sugar control, and significant weight loss within six months. Stopping Semaglutide may cause rebound effects, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial. Common side effects include nausea and diarrhea, and pancreatitis is a rare but serious risk. Consulting his doctor is essential for safe use.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
