Is it safe to use an infrared sauna with sensorineural hearing loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I need to know if it is safe for me to use an infrared sauna if I have sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus, which I developed two months ago. I am attempting to heal it. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Using an infrared sauna with sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus (explain) requires careful consideration. I suggest you get physically examined by an ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor. Infrared saunas generate heat, which might affect your tinnitus. Heat can sometimes exacerbate tinnitus (the perception of sound that does not have an external source, so other people cannot hear it) symptoms.

Infrared saunas increase blood flow, which might be beneficial for some conditions but could potentially aggravate others. So, ensure you stay hydrated and limit the time spent in the sauna to avoid overheating. It is also advisable to start with short sessions and see how your body and ears respond.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
