Why does a woman have clitoral irritation after sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend had sex with her girlfriend, and she experienced irritation on her clitoris for 13 days straight. It did not hurt or smell foul; it was just irritation. Now, she has some bumps inside her vaginal lips, and they appear red.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Irritation lasting that long on the clitoris, followed by red bumps on the inner lip, points more toward either some local infection, possibly fungal or bacterial, or even a mild sexually transmitted infection that is showing up after contact.

Since it is red and bumpy, we also think of an allergic reaction or friction-related lesions, but persistence makes infection more likely. Nothing severe is suggested yet since there is no pain or discharge, but it still needs a closer look. The probable diagnosis is vulvovaginal infection with irritation.

You should go for the following investigations:

  1. A vaginal swab for bacterial or fungal culture.

  2. Basic STIs (sexually transmitted infections).

  3. Screening including HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), syphilis, herpes, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.

  4. A physical examination by a gynecologist to confirm the type of lesions is advisable.

Treatment:

  1. The area should be kept clean, soaps and irritants avoided, and cotton underclothes worn.

  2. Further sexual contact should be avoided until examined.

  3. If it is fungal, antifungal creams or tablets will be required, and if bacterial, then antibiotics will be needed, but the exact treatment should only be started after swab results and examination.

  4. Self-medication should be avoided.

Safe sex practices, barrier protection, good hygiene, avoiding scented products or harsh soaps, and keeping the area dry are important preventive measures.

She should see a gynecologist soon for an internal examination and swab. Please share if there is any discharge, pain, or fever, or if the bumps turn into blisters. I strongly suggest following up here with updates or uploading any reports once done, and also consulting a gynecologist in person for confirmation.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
