What are the chances of getting osteochondrodysplasia genetically?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My cousin was recently diagnosed with something called osteochondrodysplasia, some kind of bone disease. Now, I am thinking about starting a family, and I heard these things might run in the family. I am a bit fuzzy on the details, so I was wondering if you could shed some light. What are the chances of passing on this bone condition to my future child if it is in the family tree? And just so I am clued in, are there any signs or symptoms I should be on the lookout for? I really appreciate your time on this. Planning for a little one is exciting, but I want to make sure I have all the facts. If there is anything I can do on my end to keep things in check, I am all ears.

Kindly help.

Hi,

Thank you for trusting us with your healthcare.

I have reviewed your medical history and understand your concerns.

If everything else is well, I think you should go ahead and plan a family. There is a range of diseases, both generic and non-genetic, which might occur at any time in life. There is no guarantee that the same medical condition will be passed on to offspring. Alternatively, you can visit a hospital or undergo genetic testing if you are very particular. Personally, I would suggest talking to your partner and building up trust because health at times is very uncertain and should not be taken for granted.

You can always come back and reach me at icliniq.com.

Thank you for consulting me.
