Why do I have impulsive spending and reduced sleep?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 24 years old, and over the past year, I have been spending money in ways that no longer feel normal. Some weeks, I barely sleep, I start multiple online shopping orders, and I book random trips. During these times, I feel extremely confident, as if nothing can go wrong. However, after a few days, I crashed badly and avoided everyone.

My sister believes this could be connected to bipolar disorder or hypomania, but I have never been properly evaluated. Can impulsive spending at my age indicate an undiagnosed mood disorder? Should I see a psychiatrist even if these phases come and go quickly? Additionally, how do doctors typically differentiate between stress and hypomania?

Please guide.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and would like to help you with your problem.

Based on your explanation, it seems you may be experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder, but to be certain, you should consult a psychiatrist. Bipolar disorder (formerly manic-depression) is a chronic mental health condition involving severe mood swings, including emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). It affects energy, sleep, judgment, and daily functioning. While it requires lifelong management, usually involving medication and therapy, many individuals lead full, productive lives.

Impulsive spending at any age could be a sign of mania, which is a phase of bipolar disorder. It is important to get a thorough evaluation from a licensed psychiatrist. These phases could indeed be bipolar even if they are brief. To differentiate stress from hypomania, a psychiatrist will typically ask you and your family members a series of questions that will aid in making a definitive diagnosis.

I hope I have addressed all of your queries and concerns. Please follow up whenever needed.

Take care and have a nice day.
