Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have an infant who is six weeks old. My worry is that he only gets around six to eight hours of sleep per day within a span of 24 hours. He appears to be sleepy but is unable to fall asleep, hence being awake for quite some time. He takes formula milk. Is this normal for his age, or could there be an underlying problem?
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand the concern.
On average, a healthy six-week-old baby normally needs about 14 to 17 hours of sleep daily, yet a significant variance may occur in the amount of sleep. If your baby sleeps only for six to eight hours, he has substantially less sleep than usual, which means that this behavior is not normal.
There are several reasons why your baby stays awake: hunger, gastroesophageal reflux, gas, overstimulation, or a bad sleep environment. In rare cases, a health problem may affect your baby's ability to sleep. Because your baby is tired but cannot fall asleep, I would like to advise you to have your baby checked by a doctor within 24 hours.
In the meantime:
The feeding schedule must be followed, and burp him right after each feeding.
Make sure that the ambience of the room is quiet and dark during sleep times and only swaddle him if you have to.
Check if he feeds well and is growing normally, and has at least six wet diapers in a day.
Get immediate medical help when you see:
Fever.
Trouble breathing.
Constant vomiting.
Inability to feed well.
Weakness.
Continuous crying.
I would like to know more in detail. Can I ask the following questions?
Has this been his nature all along in terms of his sleeping habits, or is it recent?
How many formula feeds does he take per feed, and how often does he take them?
Does he gain adequate weight and void both urine and stools on a regular basis?
Is he an excessive crier, back-arker, and spitter of formula?
Does he sleep for a short while and wake up immediately, or does he remain awake for long?
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
