What are the possible causes of restless and disturbed sleep?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 33-year-old female. Every night, I lay in bed for hours, unable to shut off my mind, and when I do finally manage to drift off, it is this restless, disturbed sleep. I wake up feeling more exhausted than when I went to bed, and I am not able to take care of my family at the best level. I am starting to wonder if I have some kind of sleep disorder or if there is an underlying issue causing this. What the long-term effects might be? Is there anything you can do to help me figure out what is going on and how to finally get a good sleep?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Possible causes of your condition include insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, stress, and anxiety. It can lead to an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, the likelihood of anxiety, depression, and reduced quality of life.

I suggest the following steps to improve sleep:

1. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

2. Create a comfortable sleep environment.

3. Limit screen time before bed.

4. Avoid caffeine and heavy meals before bedtime.

5. Practice deep breathing, meditation, or yoga.

6. Consider reading a book or taking a warm bath before bed.

Get physically examined by a doctor. Regular exercise helps improve sleep quality. Balanced nutrition can support overall health and sleep.

I hope this information helps you.

Revert in case of queries.

Regards.
