Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I suppose I am suffering from anxiety. Also, I get scared of certain people or situations where I feel that I will be judged. Always, I think that people are judging me on whatever I do. So, I get anxious. This is a pattern since long. I understand that I can overcome it, as I find that there are few reference points in my memory where I have handled those situations well. I think I need help now as it interferes in my day to day life. Although I am able to manage it till now and am leading a good life, I think that I can do much better at work and relationships and will be able to enjoy life.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your problem. Feelings that people are judging you, becoming conscious when people are around you could be occurring due to anxiety, most likely social anxiety. This should be evaluated properly. Do you have difficulty in talking with strangers or ladies? Do you have problems in group discussions or in presentations? Have you sought any help for this problem? How do you control the problem? Social anxiety can be treated easily with medicines and behavior therapy. This will help improve your productivity. Please provide me more details in follow up.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I do feel difficulty in talking to ladies who are not my friends or relatives. I do not have much problem with strangers, but do have difficulty in approaching someone with more authority than me (feeling that he or she will judge me, or many times feel unnecessarily scared, which I have to control and do my job anyway). Yes, I feel very uncomfortable. In office politics kind of environment, I find it hard to concentrate, and do not feel like saying anything because of stress, which is always taken negatively. Sometimes I am able to control, many times not. I control it by ignoring annoying thoughts.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thanks for providing me the details. The symptoms are pointing towards social anxiety only. These symptoms like difficulty in presentations or in office or in group discussions, feeling of being judged, etc., are seen in social anxiety only. Try relaxation exercises like yoga, progressive muscle relaxation exercises and this will help in improving your confidence. There are drugs like Sertraline or Escitalopram (SSRI drugs). These drugs help to improve the anxiety and also help in reducing social phobia. For anxiety-provoking situations, I suggest using Propranolol on SOS basis. This will help reduce anxiety symptoms in situations like presentations or in group discussions etc. These medicines are safe to use and do not cause dependence. You can talk with your psychiatrist for that. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
