Why does eating in public make me anxious?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 56 years old and have been struggling with weight-related issues for many years, but lately I have noticed something that feels harder to explain than just physical health. Whenever I eat in front of others, especially at work or social events, I become very self-conscious and sometimes avoid eating altogether.

That is why I keep asking, why do I feel embarrassed eating anything in front of others at 56? because it does not seem fully about hunger or diet anymore. I worry that people are watching what I eat or how much I eat, even when no one says anything.

This has started affecting my social life and even family gatherings. I do not know whether this is something related to long-term body image issues or if it could be connected to emotional eating patterns.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It sounds very distressing to feel uncomfortable during situations that should be simple and enjoyable, such as sharing a meal with family, friends, or colleagues. The feelings you describe can be related to long-standing body image concerns, past experiences of criticism or judgment, weight stigma, social anxiety, or a heightened awareness of how you believe others may perceive you.

Over time, these experiences can create a strong sense of self-consciousness around eating, even when there is no evidence that others are paying close attention. For some people, concerns about weight and eating become emotionally linked, leading to avoidance of eating in public or increased stress during social gatherings.

While emotional eating and body image issues can certainly contribute, the fear of being watched or judged may also reflect an anxiety pattern that deserves attention in its own right.

Since this is affecting your social life and family interactions, it would be worthwhile to speak with a mental health professional who can help explore the underlying causes and provide practical strategies to build confidence around eating in social settings.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
