Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am experiencing a severe sore throat and have taken a Pentrexyl tablet. I also took Carafate and Omeprazole earlier this morning, and I wanted to ask how long I should wait before taking NyQuil after the Pentrexyl. Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
From a biological perspective, there are no harmful reactions of Pentrexyl (a Penicillin antibiotic) and NyQuil, and these drugs do not have to be taken well apart. The one consideration for timing is associated with Carafate (Sucralfate), which inhibits the absorption of antibiotics in the stomach.
Ideally, Pentrexyl and Carafate are taken two hours before or 2 to 4 hours after administration of the other. Omeprazole does not interact significantly with the two drugs and can thus be continued. After taking Pentrexyl and taking it well apart from Carafate, NyQuil can subsequently be taken on the same day for relief of various symptoms.
However, DayQuil and NyQuil cannot be taken closely, since both of these contain Acetaminophen and Dextromethorphan, whose intake above the recommended dosage can potentially cause harm. Because of the persistence of the soreness of your throat for the last five days, in case you experience an exacerbation of the condition, development of a fever, swallowing difficulty, or failure to respond to antibiotic therapy, you ought to consult a physician for further review for any complications, especially for reflux-associated irritation of the throat.
I hope the information helps.
Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
