How do I treat a sore throat with ulcers?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a very sore throat for the last three days and have been taking pain killers and antibiotic (Azithromycin 500), but they only gave temporary relief. I noticed small ulcers at the visible part of my throat, not sure if these were there when the symptoms started. These are the only symptoms I have. I checked symptoms of tonsillitis but did not have them except sore throat.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If it is an ulcer, the antibiotic can worsen it, so please stop antibiotics. Please capture a photo for your throat and send it to me. I need to see the ulcer. Is the ulcer tender for food and water? Do you have reflux?

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you, doctor,

I am unable to determine if the ulcers are tender to food and water, but overall, my throat is, even to my saliva. I am not sure if deep down my throat I have ulcers, but my entire throat burns intensely, also if I eat anything mildly spicy. I have attached ulcer images for your reference.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It seems to be a fungal infection. Please stop the antibiotics and use the topical antifungal oral gel as Daktarin oral gel or Miconaz (Miconazole) oral gel. Use antiviral too as Acyclovir tablets, one tablet every eight hours for two days. Avoid spicy foods.

Thank you.
