What could be the cause of severe pain after a spinal fusion surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a spinal fusion surgery at L1 for a burst fracture a few years back. Now the screws are backing out. It is loose and the bone has not fused correctly. I have been experiencing severe pain in that region for the past many days. What to do?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

I went through your reports (the attachments removed to protect the patient's identity).

The screws seem to be in a pretty decent position to me though one screw seems to be broken but I doubt it would cause you so much pain. I cannot comment on healing as the quality of the X-ray picture is not very good. I suggest you take the following medications.

1. Take a tablet of Ibuprofen (painkiller) twice daily for 10 days after food.

2. Take a tablet of Rabeprazole (antacid) twice daily for 10 days before food.

3. Take a tablet of Shelcal (calcium and cholecalciferol) once daily for 30 days before food.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

Hope it helps.

Thanks and regards.
