Can exerting too much pressure harm the discs of the spine?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My upper back was pressed by the physiotherapist in a laid-down position (face down on the bed) three days ago. He used both hands to press my upper spine from the t1 to the t4 region. I felt extreme pain when he pressed my upper back and heard several cracking sounds from the upper spine he pressed. After that, my upper back is very painful. It feels like the pain is from the bones. I also keep burping. What is the cause of the pain? Does it hurt the spine disc?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I can understand your concern. Too much pressure can cause injury to the spine. I would suggest you get an X-ray done and follow the steps mentioned below:

Avoid lifting heavy weights.

Avoid arching your back, instead bend your knees to pick up something from the floor.

Avoid sitting for long hours.

Avoid two-wheeler rides.

Improve your posture while sitting. Try to sit with your back straight.

Try to get up from your chair every 20 minutes take a quick walk around and continue working. Always sit on a chair with back support.

Do not get up suddenly from your chair. Rather, turn to the side and then get up.

Take bed rest only in case of severe pain.

Do hot fomentations locally over the affected area at least twice daily.

I suggest you apply a pain-relief gel as a local application, twice daily. Additionally take tablet Etoricoxib 60 mg twice daily for 10 days after meals, tablet Rabeprazole 20 mg twice daily for 10 days before meals, tablet Shelcal CT (calcium) once daily for 30 days before meals, and tablet Vitamin D 60 K once daily for 10 days before meals, then once a month for 11 months. Take these tablets if you are not allergic to them. Also, do not take these tablets if you have a known case of bronchial asthma. Follow up immediately in case of any untoward reactions. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.
