Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had a hysterectomy, and my ovaries were removed 12 days ago. Since then, I have been noticing light spotting. It has been about 12 to 13 days, and the bleeding has not completely stopped. It is not heavy bleeding, just spotting. There is no associated fever or pain.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand that this situation can feel worrying, especially after undergoing a major surgery such as a hysterectomy with the removal of the ovaries.
It is natural to be concerned when spotting continues, but light bleeding or spotting for up to two weeks can be normal during recovery. During the procedure, the top of the vagina (known as the vaginal cuff) is stitched closed, and these tissues can take anywhere from two to six weeks to heal fully. Because of this healing process, mild spotting or a small amount of pink or brown discharge is common and usually not a cause for alarm.
It is also reassuring that you have not experienced symptoms such as fever, severe abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge, heavy bleeding, or large blood clots. The absence of these signs generally suggests that healing is progressing without complications.
However, it is still important to remain observant. Although uncommon, complications such as infection or vaginal cuff issues can occur. You should seek urgent medical care if you notice a foul or unpleasant odor, develop a fever, experience increasing or severe pain, pass large clots, if the bleeding suddenly becomes heavy, or if you are soaking through a pad within an hour.
For the time being, it is best to continue taking precautions to support healing. Avoid heavy lifting, straining, sexual intercourse, and inserting anything into the vagina until your doctor gives clearance, as these activities may interfere with the healing stitches and delay recovery.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
