What can be the cause of squinting while reading?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a software engineering student, and I have been experiencing headaches, squinting, and blurred vision while trying to focus and read. Additionally, I often get headaches when spending time in bright places or using electronic screens. Based on these symptoms, I was prescribed the following:

  1. Right eye: sphere: plane, cylinder: 0.75, Axis: 80, Vision: 6/6.
  2. Left eye: sphere: plane, cylinder: 0.5, Axis: 110, Vision: 6/6.
  3. Distance PD (pupillary diameter): 62 mm
  4. Lens type: Photochromic, single vision.

I have tried using blue-cut lenses with this prescription. While they have improved my ability to read physical materials, they have not resolved the issues I face with bright lights and computer screens. I still feel dizzy and experience headaches in these situations.

Could you please advise me on what I should do next to address these problems?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry; I am here to take care of you.

Regarding your symptoms, I believe you have developed photophobia, which is a condition where you are not able to tolerate bright light. The photochromic single vision that was prescribed to you was the treatment for the condition but it seems the problem is still persistent.

So, I would like you to wear polarized sunglasses to reduce glare and light sensitivity or consider FL-41 tinted lenses, specifically designed for photophobia. And reduce exposure to computer screens. Reply to me if you have more concerns or questions by scheduling a direct appointment or following up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
