Is stem cell therapy effective for spinal cord injury?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a desperate inquiry about my brother's spinal cord injury. He is 29 years old and suffered a complete T4 injury in a motorcycle accident 14 months ago. His conventional rehabilitation has plateaued, leaving him permanently wheelchair-dependent with no sensation or movement below mid-chest. His medical team has been compassionate but clear about the permanence of his condition. Recently, we discovered multiple international clinics offering stem-cell treatments claiming potential neural regeneration for spinal injuries. A clinic has helped patients with similar injuries regain some function. Are these treatments grounded in actual medical science or predatory exploitation? How can we distinguish between legitimate research and false promises? My brother's mental health is deteriorating as hope fades.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Are these treatments grounded in actual medical science or predatory exploitation?

Mesenchymal stem cell therapy is picking up in the recent times as a treatment option to retard the progression of several nerve related ailments.

In your brother's case, as I understand, due to a motorcycle accident, there has been severe damage at the level of T4 in the thoracic spine. Before you jump and decide on getting him this treatment, sit down with your neurologist or consult an experienced neurologist to understand the depth of injury he has undergone and how much can be recovered through this process. There is no quick fix for nerve-related injury healing. So, do not blindly fall for claims propagating such ideas to you.

How can we distinguish between legitimate research and false promises?

Stem cell therapy is a genuine treatment option when done under a genuine, legitimate medical provider. Enrolling your brother in clinical trials and going for the same would be a safer option, as follow-ups are done properly, and the procedure's safety is guaranteed. Wherever in the world they may be offering this, it is a newer treatment that is still in the process of developing into a full-fledged treatment option.

My brother's mental health is deteriorating as hope fades.

I can feel the agony he is going through at such a young age. But this should not shake you all up as a family and push you to make a wrong decision without understanding.

You can also approach naturopathy or Ayurvedic healing centres without stopping the support the allopathy team is offering.

I have personally seen many patient's recover over years by going through a healing process to regenerate the spinal nerve and overall circulatory system of the body in the field of Ayurveda. It is a slow but a legitimate process which also helps and works on mental health of the patient in concern.

Look around and try to apply the best suitable treatment options available from different disciplines of medicine.

Stem cell therapy has its plus and minuses, as does any therapy offered. So, if you decide to go for it do your research, understand the good and the bad outcomes. Only after that proceed.

Considering your brother's age, he is still young. Though the nerve damage is quite severe, still, over the years, if not a hundred percent, we can expect improvement to a good extent based on the type of recovery healing systems he gets to be a part of.

I wish you and your family a healthy and cautious journey ahead. Do not make any decision in haste or an emotional state. Logical and practical understanding should guide what decision you make.

Take care.
