Is SBRT effective for small lung tumors in older adults?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

What is SBRT radiation, and does it cure lung cancer? My father was just told he might need this, and I have never heard of it before. How is it different from normal radiation, and is it actually strong enough to completely cure lung cancer, or does it just shrink the tumor for a while?

He is 68 years old, and the oncologist said the tumor is small, so he is a good candidate. We do not want to get our hopes up without understanding what this treatment actually does.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

First of all, stereotactic body radiotherapy is one of the very good techniques used in radiotherapy, especially when the tumor is detected early, because it is highly precise and accurate. It targets the tumor while providing maximum sparing of the normal tissues around it, so it is much more precise than older radiation techniques.

It is also associated with fewer side effects compared to traditional surgeries that were used for lung cancer. For this reason, it is considered an excellent option when suitable for the patient’s condition.

As long as it is available and appropriate for your father’s case, it is a reasonable and supported approach. Traditional surgeries can have more complications, and patients may feel weak after the operation, with a slower recovery.

With this form of radiotherapy, treatment is usually completed over a shorter period, and patients often tolerate it well and can go home without major problems. Afterward, a close follow-up is important to monitor the response and maintain control of the tumor.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
