How to manage the risks due to weight in pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

As a 12-week pregnant woman who is overweight, I am increasingly worried about the risk of stillbirth and its potential implications for my baby's health. I understand that parental obesity is considered a risk factor for stillbirth and maternal health complications during childbirth. Could you provide insights into how my weight may impact my pregnancy and any proactive steps I can take to mitigate these risks? Your guidance on optimizing maternal health would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query and understand your concern.

There are criteria according to the BMI (body mass index). If you are overweight and your BMI is more than normal, then you should gain 15 to 17 lbs during the whole pregnancy. A total gain of 24 lbs (pounds) is required. I will not advise you to do strenuous exercise and long fastings to reduce weight, as pregnancy is not a good time to reduce weight. During the pregnancy, body water retention occurs, and overall body weight increases, so to not gain a lot of weight, you can do some light exercises, avoid junk food, and have more green leafy vegetables and fruits in your diet.

I hope this information helps you,

Feel free to ask further questions.

Thank you.

Regards.
