How to treat gas pain and constipation in 67-year-old male?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 67-year-old father has been experiencing stomach pain, specifically in the front part of his abdomen, for the past 8 days. Although he has taken pain medication which provides some relief, the pain has not completely subsided. Additionally, he is frequently belching, unable to pass gas through the rectum, and this seems to result in gas accumulation in his stomach. Over the last two days, he has also developed constipation. The constant feeling of fullness due to gas has significantly reduced his appetite.

Currently, he is taking Drotin DS twice a day for pain relief and has tried Colimax for stomach pain, which offered only partial relief. He is also taking Pantoprazole 40 mg once a day to address the issue of gas.

I would greatly appreciate any further recommendations you may have regarding his condition. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I suggest regular exercise, meditation, and yoga. In addition to that, I would also suggest you father increase his daily water intake and ensure he his consuming an adequate amount of dietary fiber to promote digestive health.

I would suggest the following medications:

  1. Take one Capsule Sompraz D (Esomeprazole and Domperidone) daily before breakfast.
  2. Take one Tablet Rifagut 550 mg (Rifaximin) twice daily after meals.
  3. Take one Tablet Cyclopam (Dicyclomine and Paracetamol) twice daily after meals.
  4. Mix two scoops of Lactifiber (Lactitol and Ispaghula) granules with a glass of water and consume it at bedtime.

Continue this regimen for a period of 15 days. Consult your specialist doctor, talk to them, and then take the medications as per their suggestion.

I would also suggest the following diagnostic tests:

  1. CBC (Complete Blood Count)
  2. LFT (Liver Function Test)
  3. KFT (Kidney Function Test)
  4. RBS (Random Blood Sugar)
  5. USG (Ultrasonography) of the whole abdomen

Kindly follow these recommendations and undergo the specified tests to better understand your father's health condition.

If you have any concerns or questions, do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you.
