Why do I sweat immediately after doing small things?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a problem. I really want to understand what is going on. I sweat easily; it does not matter what I am doing, even if it is something like going for a short walk or doing a little bit of work. I start to sweat away.

Help me out.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your question. I understand what is bothering you.

I am sorry this is bothering you. Many people sweat a lot, so you are not alone.

You might have something called hyperhidrosis. This is when your body makes a lot of sweat. It does not matter if you are running or just sitting around; your body still makes a lot of sweat. You can even sweat when you are resting or just sitting down.

Hyperhidrosis is something that a lot of people have. Reasons why you might sweat a lot may be due to:

  • Hyperhidrosis.
  • Feeling worried or stressed about something.
  • Drinking things like tea or coffee or energy drinks.
  • Eating foods that are really spicy.
  • Being overweight.
  • Hormone problems.
  • High or low blood sugar levels.
  • Having a fever or an infection.
  • Some medicines.

I would like to ask a couple of questions to better understand what could be causing your symptoms. Those details help tell if it is just a sweating tendency or something like thyroid or hormonal causes.

  • Do you sweat everywhere or just in one area (underarms, palms, face, feet)?
  • Is it occurring even when you are sitting still?
  • Are you also experiencing weight loss, rapid heartbeat, tremor, or feeling hot all the time?
  • Do you sweat while you are sleeping?
  • When did this begin?
  • Are you always like this, or is this a new thing?

There are some things you can try to help reduce sweating and make yourself feel more comfortable.

  • Wear cotton clothes that will let your skin breathe more easily.
  • It might also help to stay away from coffee, tea, and spicy foods for a few days because these things can trigger sweating sometimes.
  • Use an antiperspirant, one that has aluminum chloride in it, at night.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Try to keep your room cool or use a fan to make yourself feel more comfortable.

If your sweating is new. If it has suddenly gotten worse or if you have other symptoms like weight loss or your heart is beating really fast, or if sweating is really bothering you in your daily life, you should go see a doctor.

If you sweat a lot while you are sleeping at night, tell a doctor. The doctor may do some simple tests to find out if something else is making you sweat so much.

I hope this helps.

Thanks.
