What are the potential complications that occur with untreated syphilis?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My friend is 50 years old. He was diagnosed with syphilis recently. I need a brief overview of this condition. What are the stages of syphilis, how is it diagnosed, and what are the potential complications that occur with untreated syphilis? Additionally, what preventive measures can be taken to reduce the risk of contracting syphilis, and how to treat it?
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It has four main stages: primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary.
1. Primary stage: A painless sore (chancre) appears at the injection site, usually around the genitals, rectum, or mouth. It lasts for three to six weeks and heals on its own, but the infection remains active.
2. Secondary stage: Non-specific symptoms such as rashes, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue occur. These symptoms also resolve on their own, but the infection remains active.
3. Latent stage: The infection remains dormant for years without any symptoms.
4. Tertiary stage: This stage involves severe complications like neurological issues, cardiovascular problems, and gummas (painful skin ulcers).
Diagnosis is typically done through blood tests, such as the rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test, Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test, or Treponema pallidum particle agglutination (TPPA) test. Untreated syphilis can lead to severe complications, including damage to internal organs, blindness, deafness, and neurological problems. To reduce the risk of contracting syphilis, practice safe sex by using condoms consistently and getting regularly tested for STIs. Limiting the number of sexual partners and being in a mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner also helps. Syphilis is treatable with antibiotics, primarily Benzathine penicillin. In case of penicillin allergy, alternative antibiotics like Doxycycline or Azithromycin can be prescribed. It is crucial to complete the prescribed treatment, even if symptoms disappear, to avoid the risk of complications.
I hope you find this helpful.
