Can Tamsulosin and Nitrofurantoin be taken simultaneously?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My question is regarding taking Tamsulosin with Nitrofurantoin together simultaneously and whether Nitrofurantoin can be taken with Losartan and Nifedipine combination. Kindly help.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You have had a urinary tract infection with a culture showing low colonies of E. coli. You have been prescribed Nitrofurantoin, which you are worried about taking in combination with Losartan or Tamsulosin. Tamsulosin is not an antibiotic. It is an alpha-blocker usually used for prostate issues to make the urine flow better. It is taken once a day, usually at night. Losartan and Nifedipine combination is an antihypertensive containing two medicines. You did not mention the dose of Nitrofurantoin that was prescribed for you. Usually, Nitrofurantoin is given for tissue irritation. If you had attached the culture report, I could have suggested something better. Take the antihypertensive medicine in the morning, and after one hour, you can take Nitrofurantoin. Do not combine antibiotics with any medications. Allow an hour gap and take it separately.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
