Can surgery correct tetralogy of Fallot in a one-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My one-year-old child has been diagnosed with tetralogy of Fallot. She has been experiencing fast breathing, difficulty in feeding, failure to thrive, and clubbed fingers but the cardiologist told me they will not be in a rush to fix the problem. I cannot stand what she is going through. What is her survival rate? Can I have the problem solved early? Of note, she is currently on Furosemide and Spironolactone.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The operation for tetralogy of Fallot depends on several factors, including the size of the patient's pulmonary artery, oxygen saturation, and the institution's experience in performing such surgeries. It is important to consult your doctor about these considerations. Regarding survival, the prognosis after successful surgery is favorable, with a survival rate of about 90 percent at 30 years of age. Without the operation, many patients may not survive.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
