Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 17-year-old son has struggled with severe asthma for years. Despite using inhalers, steroids, and allergy meds, he still ends up in the ER (emergency room) frequently. His pulmonologist recommended trying Tezspire, a new injectable treatment.
I am hesitant about starting a biologic, especially since he is so young. How does Tezspire compare to other biologics like Dupixent or Xolair? Are there long-term side effects to be concerned about, particularly for kids and teens? We just want him to breathe easier and avoid constant flare-ups. Please help.
Thank you in advance.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Tezspire (Tezepelumab) is a newer biologic treatment designed for patients with eosinophilic asthma, a type of asthma characterized by an elevated number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell that contributes to inflammation in the airways. Tezspire works by targeting and inhibiting thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), a key protein involved in the inflammatory process. By blocking TSLP, Tezspire disrupts the inflammatory chain reaction triggered by various chemokines and cytokines, which are responsible for airway inflammation and asthma flare-ups.
Before starting Tezspire, it is essential to determine whether it is the right treatment for you. A key step in this process is measuring your IgE (immunoglobulin E) levels and eosinophil count. Elevated levels of both IgE and eosinophils are often indicators that Tezspire could be an effective option. If your tests show that these markers are raised, then Tezspire is likely to help manage your asthma and reduce flare-ups.
It is important to discuss these tests with your healthcare provider to ensure that Tezspire is the right choice based on your specific condition. They can help guide you through the process and determine the most appropriate course of treatment.
I hope this helps.
Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
