Is Tezspire safe for athletes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I need urgent advice for my 17-year-old daughter with severe asthma. She has been hospitalized three times in six weeks despite following her treatment plan religiously. The pulmonologist wants to start her on Tezspire immediately, but we are concerned about the potential risks. We cannot risk anything affecting her lung function or performance. Her current regimen includes Symbicort, Montelukast, and frequent Ventolin. The allergist says her IgE levels are not elevated enough for Xolair, which is why they are suggesting Tezspire instead. How different is Tezspire from other asthma medications? Is it safe for athletes? Will the every-four-week injections interfere with her competition schedule? She is terrified of becoming dependent on yet another medication at her age.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Tezspire (Tezepelumab) is an add-on maintenance treatment for people aged 12 and older with severe asthma. It is not a rescue medication. Tezspire helps prevent severe asthma attacks (exacerbations) and can improve your breathing.

Its side effects include rash, breathing problems, hives, red, itchy, swollen, or inflamed eyes, swelling of your face, mouth, and tongue, fainting, dizziness, and feeling lightheaded. It takes around two weeks to a few months for Tezspire to show its effect on asthma.

I suggest you do not stop the current medications, Tezspire is just an add-on medicine. Getting asthma treated is more important than the swimming competition. Kindly take care of your health first.

I hope this helps.

Please let us know if you have any further queries. We would be happy to answer.

Thank you.
