What is the relation between thrombosis and coronary artery disease?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently learned about the connection between thrombosis and coronary artery disease, and it is worrying me. Can you provide information on how thrombosis can lead to complications in coronary artery disease, and what are the available treatments and preventive strategies for managing this risk?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thrombosis means clot formation inside blood vessels or the heart. When coronary arteries are narrowed due to plaque formation, and once this plaque ruptures, a thrombus is formed in the artery, and a heart attack ensues. The same occurs in brain arteries and causes a stroke. The same is true for other arteries, like kidneys etc. Risk factors are old age, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, etc. Prevention measures are smoking cessation, exercise, a Mediterranean diet, etc.

I hope this helps.
