Can thumb sucking affect the child's teeth arrangement?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

If a child sucks the thumb in an opposite inward direction, can it affect the teeth? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Thumb sucking habit always affects tooth arrangement. It leads to open bite (outward proclination of teeth) and should be checked at the earliest.

If possible, kindly upload an image of the kid's teeth opening his mouth wide to get a clear idea of the current situation. I will walk you through the needed management. Once the open bite develops, it needs serious attention. So, I would request you to upload an image of the teeth arrangement of the kid. I suggest you follow the below-mentioned therapies-

  1. Preventive therapy: Feed the child whenever they are hungry. Let him or her eat as much as they want. That will exhaust the sucking urge.
  2. Reminder therapy: Apply bitter taste or foul-smelling preparation on the thumb or finger that is sucked.
  3. Mechanical therapy: This includes the application of adhesive tapes. A thumb guard is the most effective extraoral appliance that helps control the habit. Use a long-sleeved nightgown.
  4. Dental appliance therapy: Various orthodontic appliances are used to break the habit such as a palatal crib, and Hawley's retainer. Fixed appliances such as upper lingual tongue screens can also help. These appliances will be made by the dentist to assist stoppage of thumb sucking habit.

These steps will help you out in the cessation of thumb sucking habit.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
