Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend has been struggling with thyroid eye disease (TED), and her doctor mentioned Tepezza as a possible treatment. Can you explain the role of Tepezza in managing TED, how it differs from other treatment options, and whether some specific factors or conditions determine its suitability for individuals with TED? Kindly explain in detail.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

Tepezza (Teprotumumab) targets and blocks IGF-1R (Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor) and inhibits fibroblast activation via the IGF-1R or TSHR (thyroid stimulating hormone receptor complex) signaling complex. It is a monoclonal antibody and a new concept for treatment. If other modalities have failed, this can be a good option. Some will need repeat injections, and the treatment is costly at present. However, it has had good results in studies so far. You may also continue taking hormonal consultations for managing thyroid hormone function. Other eye protection measures are using lubricant eyedrops frequently and shields. Ointments are applied to the eye at bedtime, and using protective glasses can help.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
