What could cause painful spots and itching in the tongue?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 5-year-old son has had painful red and white inflamed spots on his tongue. It has come and gone three times in two months. They are everywhere especially at the tip and on the sides. We can visually see all the bumps, and the tongue does not look normal. He also complains that they are super itchy. Some areas look like white patches like the tongue had lost color. He was given Panadol and Nurofen but does not seem to help. What should I do?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the attached images (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) and it seems like an inflammatory or infectious lesion of the tongue making it super itchy. If the taste buds are involved then the sense of taste may also be altered in some conditions. I want to know a few details about your child. Did he have any known vitamin deficiencies or allergies?

I would like to know any past medical history if there is, otherwise then accordingly I will prescribe a list of strategies that he needs to take.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
