What is the cause of enlarged tonsils and lymph nodes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son has a growth on his tonsil that is enlarging and has blood vessels. One enlarged cervical lymph node of two to three centimeters in diameter is noticeable. The development has been there for six months, and he also experiences night sweats. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

As per the information provided and then looking at the picture with redness and swelling of the enlarged tonsil (attachment removed to remove the patient’s identity), it may be a recurrent viral infection. However, further evaluation of lymph nodes and tonsils with blood tests is needed to rule out other disorders. A biopsy of the lymph node might be done to determine the cause. You should get him physically examined by a pediatrician and get a complete blood workup done.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
