Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 35-years-old male who suffers from Tourette’s syndrome. I am wondering if poor impulse control is a part of people who suffer from Tourette’s syndrome.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Yes, poor impulse control may be a part of Tourette syndrome. What all symptoms do you get apart from tics and poor impulse control? I would like to suggest you to please do regular physical exercise and meditation on a daily basis to get better control over your nerves. Please drink plenty of water and avoid eating oily, spicy food. Take care.
Regards.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
I take medication for my tics. At one point in my life, I was taking a medication named capsule Amantadine. For some reason, I was gambling a lot and also going to gentlemen's clubs. I read about poor impulse control due to that medication as well as the Tourette’s syndrome. I have been better since my doctor took me off that medication.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Capsule Amantadine is a common culprit resulting in impulse control dysfunction. Good that you have stopped taking that medicine since it does not help much with tic disorder either. Other medicines like the tablet Tetrabenazine (Xenazine) have a better efficacy and safety profile comparatively. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent. What medicine are you taking currently?
Regards.
