Are low TSH and normal T3 levels alarming?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level is 0.085 micro-international units per milliliter (µIU/mL), but my total triiodothyronine (T3) level is within the normal range. I would like to know if this is considered normal. I am a 34-year-old female currently undergoing Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) treatment.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level of 0.085 micro-international units per milliliter (µIU/mL) is lower than the normal range, which typically indicates hyperthyroidism. However, since your total triiodothyronine (T3) level is normal, it is important to also check your free thyroxine (free T4) levels to get a complete picture of your thyroid function. Low TSH with normal T3 can sometimes be seen in early or subclinical hyperthyroidism, or it could be a transient condition. It is also important to consider any symptoms you might be experiencing, such as weight loss, palpitations, or anxiety.

I recommend discussing these results with your endocrinologist or healthcare provider, especially since you are undergoing intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment. They can provide a more detailed evaluation and guide you on the next steps. Please book a consultation with me if you would like more detailed information on any of these points or if you have other questions.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
