How can tuberculosis be prevented?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am from a country where tuberculosis is common, and I have been vaccinated since a young age. But since I migrated to a place where it is not common, I am scared that I will be infected again. Can you please explain how this works? Should I be taking any additional precautions?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) vaccine has a documented protective effect against meningitis and disseminated TB (tuberculosis) in children. It does not prevent primary infection and, more importantly, does not prevent the reactivation of latent pulmonary infection, which is the principal source of bacillary spread in the community. Therefore, you should always work to increase your immunity, take preventive measures, especially in crowded areas, and eat a good high-protein diet.

TB prevention measures include avoiding close contact with people with active TB disease and treating latent TB infections. TB spreads through the air when someone with an active infection talks, coughs, or speaks. Get tested if you have a higher risk of TB or think you may have been exposed. If you test positive for latent or active TB, take all the medication prescribed. If you have been diagnosed with active TB, avoid crowds and close contact with others until you are no longer contagious. Wear a mask if you have active TB and have to spend time around others.

I hope this information helps you.

Revert in case of queries.

Regards.
