Can lifestyle changes help manage type 1 diabetes naturally?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 54-year-old woman, and I have been dealing with diabetes for the past six years, and have been on Metformin 500 mg and Gliptin 20 mg. I have been taking these medications regularly, and what if I skip one time? Should I take two doses at night? Is there any alternative to medications? How to control blood sugar levels with exercise and diet? Should I be taking these medicines for life? Any better medication than Metformin to treat diabetes early?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is important to take your diabetes medications as prescribed. If you accidentally miss a dose of Metformin or Gliptin, do not double the dose to make up for it. Instead, take your next dose at the regular time. Taking double doses can increase the risk of side effects, especially for Metformin, which can cause gastrointestinal issues.

  1. While medications like Metformin and Gliptin are effective in managing blood sugar, lifestyle changes can play a major role in controlling diabetes.

  1. Regular physical activity, such as brisk walking, cycling, or strength training, can help improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar, and promote overall health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.

  1. A healthy diet is also crucial.

  1. Focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods, such as vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats.

  1. Limit refined carbohydrates and sugary foods, and consider eating smaller, balanced meals throughout the day to help regulate blood sugar.

  1. Metformin is typically a long-term medication for managing type 2 diabetes, but newer medications like SGLT2 inhibitors (for example, Empagliflozin) or GLP-1 receptor agonists (for example, Liraglutide) may be recommended for better blood sugar control, weight loss, and heart protection.

    I hope this helps.

    Thank you.
